Cathy Thoo

Cathy Thoo FRACS


Cathy is a Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon based in Hobart, providing a Statewide service for Tasmania. She is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and a Member of the Australia and New Zealand Society for Vascular Surgery (ANZSVS) since 2009. Prior to her move to Tasmania, she was based at the Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney NSW for 10 years. She is currently the unit supervisor at Royal Hobart Hospital for the Vascular SET trainee and the intern. Cathy plays an active role in medical student education with structured lectures and bedside clinical teaching. She is a mentor with Women in Medicine and Surgery. Cathy is currently a member of the Continued Professional Development (CPD) & Audit committee for the ANZSVS. She is a first- and second-line assessor for the Tasmania Audit of Surgical Mortality (TASM). She has also been a Co-Chairperson, presenter and panellist at a number of Australian conferences and workshops. Cathy is also the convener of the ANZSVS 2022 Conference in Hobart.  
 
What operation do you enjoy doing the most and why?
Performing a carotid endarterectomy and patch under local anaesthetic and sedation is my favourite operation. It reflects the trust between the patient, surgeon and anaesthetist.

What are three things still left on your bucket list?
1. Be a grandmother.
2. To grow an amazing organic vegetable and herb garden. 
3. Learn to sail. 
 
If you could have any one superpower, which would you chose?
The superpower of Teleportation…
 
What’s the best advice you’ve ever heard?
Treat others as you would like to be treated. Trust in yourself. Never give up.
